Progressive, Bossless, Self-Managed, Flat, Adaptive. What's in a Name?!

We thought it would be worthwhile to reassess the best name for what we mostly refer to as 'progressive organizations.' Boy, did it spark some debate! More than 1,300 people responded. Here's the outcome.

The reason we went out looking for help was that we feel 'progressive organizations' sounds too dull, too vague.

We wanted something bolder and clearer.

The polls on LinkedIn, X, and the Corporate Rebels Academy sparked some interesting debate. Do we call them progressive, bossless, self-managed, flat, adaptive, decentralized?!

Over 1,300+ people voted. The results are in.

And the winner is...

My personal favorite, 'bossless,' got hammered with less than 5% of the votes. Ouch...

The two favorites: flat and self-managed. But the winner, both in quantitative terms and in qualitative terms (based on the discussions):

“Self-managed organizations”

Clearly, it isn't perfect. It's not broad enough to capture the full complexities of these organizations and the many things they do differently than traditional organizations. It's focused too much on structure, too little on many other things.

And there are probably 1,000 more arguments why it's not the ideal name. I'd probably agree with most of them.

But, as many of the pioneers would say when facing a decision: Is it safe enough to try?

Yes, it certainly is. Let's use it until we find something that's significantly better.

What does this all mean?

Well, not much, to be honest. You might see a bit more of the term 'self-managed companies' pop up in our blogs and books, while seeing a decrease in the term 'progressive organizations'.

Two places where you'll definitely be seeing it:

  • The title of our new book (to be published in the summer of this year; you'll read about it soon);
